Hybrid Car Cons

Hybrid Car Owners Unhappy With MPG

Hybrids are now evolving into the sleek luxury cars engineers envisioned twenty years.  The new models are achieving the performance and mileage claims of the makers.

.............It is impossible to differentiate between today's hybrid or gas powered luxury vehicle.

Hybrid vehicles use gasoline internal combustion engine and an electric motor powered by battery. The new generation of batteries includes longer warranties and replaceable modules.

The waiting lists and prices are slowly going down as more auto makers create their own versions of the hybrid car or SUV.  These factors are changing the way that people think of hybrids.

However, the journey of the hybrid into the mainstream auto industry has not been without a tremulous start.  The current population of hybrid owners has met serious disappointments.

Poor mileage is the main problem.  Some hybrid claims of 50 mpg are averaging 30 mpg.  Drivers are frustrated as they relearn how to drive a car.

These new cars require certain skills, like the "pulse and glide," which balances the car's use of electric hybrid car cons photoand gas when traveling between 30 to 40 mph.  A combination of fancy pedal work and watching arrows on the dashboard is like flying a small jet in congested skies.

New owners need to relearn how to accelerate.  The new hybrids have improved acceleration performance, punching the gas on a hybrid drastically reduces the mileage performance.  Patience is the key to maxing the miles per gallon performance.  This is balanced with less breaking and careful attention to gas pedal pressure.

Complaints of poor performance in certain weather conditions have soured owners' opinions about their environmentally friendly vehicle.  Warming, the car battery is the biggest complaint.  The new full hybrids, which operate in either electric or gas mode have overcome this problem.

Mild hybrids, where the electric and gas components do not operate independently, have more incidents where the hybrid performed poorly in cold weather.  Cold is a factor, but too much heat is also known to wear down the battery. The engineers are combating this problem with thermal protection systems.

Toyota have recalled Prius due to a stalling problem.  Stalling and unexpected shutdown problems are attributed to a software problem.

Surprisingly, many consumers complain about the silence.  The engine becomes almost silent when idling.  This causes owners to believe they have stalled and attempt to restart the motor.

The silence poses a problem for the deaf and for children.  The potential danger has prompted some engineers to consider put noise pollution back into hybrids to ensure that pedestrians do not become victims of this new technology.

The auto industry is not surprised that hybrids have been plagued with glitches.  Compared to traditional autos, hybrids have a good reputation.  Consumers who try new technology are always pioneering the way for the rest of society.

There is always the fear that the hybrid will evolve so dramatically that their model will become obsolete within a couple years.  For many, electric hybrid cars are a glimpse into the future of automobiles.

One thing that has caused concern over the cost of hybrid cars is the extra motor, systems, batteries, and wiring associated with a hybrid vehicle. The cost of replacement batteries is still too high.  The hybrid is still not economical.

The extra cost of a hybrid far outweighs the savings in fuel costs. However, as fuel prices continue to soar and Americans continue their passion for new technology, the prospects for the new generation of hybrids looks promising.
